Placerville is the county seat of El Dorado County, California. The population was 9,610 at the 2000 census. Prior to the discovery of gold in nearby Coloma, California by James W. Marshall in 1849 sparking the California Gold Rush, the small town now known as Placerville was known as Dry Diggins after the manner in which the miners moved cartloads of dry soil to running water to separate the gold from the soil. Later in 1849, the town earned its most common historical name, Hangtown, due to the numerous hangings that had taken place there. By 1850, the temperance league and a few local churches had begun to request that a more friendly name be bestowed upon the town. The name was not changed until 1854 when the City of Placerville was incorporated. At its incorporation Placerville was the third largest town in California. In 1857 the county seat was then moved from Coloma to Placerville, where it remains today. -- Source: Wikipedia.com

Avocado Pineapple Smoothie
05/09/2012

I Heart Avocados
I Heart Avocados. I really do.
"Avocados from Mexico" had a booth at the LA Times Festival of Books and gave away stickers, recipe cards, and samples of their Avocado Pineapple Smoothies.

Last Saturday at the Festival, the weather was hot. So hot, you'd think it was already summertime and not mid-April. I was thankful that I wore a tank under my 'SC sweater, but that's what I love about LA - we have sunshine on most days out of the year.

Avocado Pineapple Smoothie, prep
Three ingredients: avocados, canned pineapple chunks, ice
Because of the heat last weekend, the smoothie sample was a welcome refreshment at the Avocado booth. The marketing team sold me on the creamy, dairy-free treat, and I knew that I'd try the recipe at home.

The recipe card included tips and more information about Mexican avocados, such as this interesting factoid:

Because of the year-round availability of the fruit, Mexican growers leave their avocados on the tree for up to a year, allowing the fruit to fully mature and develop a higher oil content.
Never knew that about avocados before, but then again, I'm still not sure if an avocado is a fruit or a vegetable.

Avocado Pineapple Smoothie
Sweet avocado pineapple treat
So yesterday I walked to the grocery store to pick up a ripe avocado and can of pineapple chunks, looking forward to an afternoon smoothie. Unfortunately, much to my dismay, I came home to empty ice trays! After washing them, I completely forgot to replace them back in the freezer. My afternoon drink turned out to be this morning's breakfast instead.

I halved the recipe by cutting up half an avocado, using half a can of pineapple chunks with half of its juice, and measuring out one cup of ice (4 cubes). Using my hand blender for the first time, I underestimated its weight and half the contents spilled on to the counter. I was left with one cup instead of two, but the amount ended up being perfect as I don't think I could have finished the full two cups.

Happy to learn another way to use an avocado!
Chase's 'Stache Pillow
I blogged about taking the Intro to Sewing class at Sew Modern on Pico Boulevard last month, and my second class was this past Wednesday evening to make an envelope pillow.

With the fundamentals somewhat down (after a brief refresher on how to thread my bobbin), I was happy to be on the machine again. And all that was needed to make the envelope pillow:

Thankfully, I purchased what I needed from the store with a 15% class discount (and borrowed some supplies I didn't have from Lauren and the store)! As a beginner, it's hard to know what I should have in my kit, how much I should spend and where to purchase everything. A sewing classmate suggested Joann's or Michael's with a coupon or sale because supplies can get pretty expensive. It may take a few months to get everything I need, but I'm in no rush.

I chose the above Alexander Henry print for the pillow front because - 1) I was immediately drawn to its graphic print for Chase; and more importantly, 2) AH Fabrics studio is locally based in Burbank, here in Southern California. I went with a solid black fabric for the pillow back and a cotton off-white contrasting thread so I could use a fun, decorative stitch for the backside.

It was such a feeling of pride and accomplishment when I stuffed my pillow at the end of class! I can't wait to learn more!

When I spooned some pureed sweet potatoes into Chase
But after the initial shock of what I can only imagine was a strange texture and different taste for him, he continued to lean forward and eat. Success!

I scrubbed two large sweet potatoes and pricked them all over with a fork. They roasted on a baking sheet at 400 degrees for an hour. After they cooled, I cut one lengthwise, scooped out the flesh, and pureed it with some breast milk until a smooth and creamy consistency. The other was saved to eat for our lunch. Win, win!

I took this photo on my iPhone a year ago driving down Ohio and Centinela, and on a gray day like today... this rainbow reminds me of why I love Los Angeles. <br />
<br />
After a rainy or windy day, the city is always so beautiful. The sky is generally clear and on really nice days if you know the special vantage points, you can see the snowcapped mountains, the downtown skyline and the blue ocean waters off of Santa Monica. I love those days and wish we had more of them.<br />

Jennifer Wolfe of CNN got it right in her article, <i><a href="http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/01/travel/los-angeles-battle-ireport/index.html">New York vs. Los Angeles: L.A. is a . She reflects on the values of our great city... of the diversity found in LA, the year-round temperate weather, the delicious foods, the beautiful people - inside and out, and the endless amount of adventures one can find in Los Angeles.

I love that she writes, "The City of Angels is a heavenly place, and even though it's not for everybody, we're sort of happy to keep it that way."
